Performance and Projection of Fenerbahçe

Fenerbahçe basketball, founded in 1913, has been a successful Turkish basketball team for many years, and their recent championship appearances may spell more success for them in the near future.

After being a consistent competitor in the Turkish leagues, Fenerbahçe is looking to continue dominating in their country and throughout Europe. They have an impressive resume including a  EuroLeague championship in 2016-2017, runners up in 2015-2016 and 2017–18, and a final four qualification in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019.

They are currently playing strong basketball with a winning record of 14-9, seated in fifth place in the EuroLeague standings, and other players are beginning to take notice. Former NBA MVP and current superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo recently said that he has been following them this year and that "they are playing very well." Giannis's brother Kostas is currently a member of Fenerbahçe.

This press and recognition for their success is something that Fenerbahçe may need to help fuel their push toward a top seed, as they're only two points out from second place. This could be redeeming after a salty ending last season which Fenerbahçe has used to spark a new approach to their roster and goals for this year.

Even though the team did not compete for the EuroLeague playoffs, a banner that Fenerbahçe has waved many times was once again raised last year was raised once more after Fenerbahçe went on to beat the reigning EuroLeague champions in the Turkish league championship.

After this feat, management decided that the goal should be heftier - a EuroLeague championship - so they sought out a newer roster containing NBA and G-League stars that may be able to help them make a push.

You can read the link below to tune in to how they started the season and what kinds of adversity they've faced:

Nemanja Bjelica, who had recently won an NBA championship with The Golden State Warriors arrived in the frontcourt, along with Carsen Edwards, a former college basketball star, Celtics guard, and a G-League sharp shooter who would help man the backcourt. This roster, though inconsistent, has the looks to be a successful and dangerous team when it comes to scoring and productivity, and if they can manage to build chemistry among these rising stars, they could be looking at a shot for the EuroLeague Championship.

After all that this program has considered when rebuilding their roster and finding assets that will boost them to the top of rankings, do you think that they have what it takes to be a top team in the EuroLeague, or do you think they'll fall short once again?

  1. Fenerbahce is looking scary! They have a great mesh of successful EuroLeague players mixed with new young talented NBA/ G-league talented players and also the addition of NBA veteran Bjelica. They seem to be on a slump right going 4-6 in their last 10 games, however, if they were to get hot and if this team makes the final four, I believe they take home the EuroLeague back to Turkey!

    1. I agree. The presence of these NBA players certainly brings talent and speed. And yes their recent slump is tough...but they can always bounce back so don't count them out!

  2. Fenerbahce's team looks dangerous and I think they will tear up the Euroleage for the next few years to come. However, it will be beneficial to them if they actually tried to get more Turkish players, as it could boost the popularity of basketball in the country and produce even better players.

    1. I totally agree. Having more Turkish players could benefit their program in many ways, and there could be more of an incentive for young Turkish players to train and play for them.

  3. Fenerbahce is looking like a team no one wants to mess with this year. It is cool to see Carsen Edwards has found a successful team to play on as I know he was lost on the Celtics roster for a few years. He was always such a great player to watch on Purdue and was bummed he didn't pan out in NBA. Are there any other famous US collegiate players that ended up on their team?

    1. Yes! The brother of Giannis Antetokounmpo (Kostas) had some minutes in the NBA before Fenerbahce signed him. Also, most notably, they also have Nemanja Bjelica, who recently won an NBA championship with The Golden State Warriors. His experience and skill should help the frontcourt perform.

  4. Fenerbahce's squad looks great. I think their mix of EuroLeague players and young NBA and G-League talent sets them up not only for success this year, but tons of success in their future as well. It is also good to have someone like Nemanja Bjelica who has a championship under his belt because he knows what it takes and has been in those high pressure situations. If I am those 4 teams ahead of Fenerbahce, I would definitely be worried about having to play this young and talented team in the playoffs. -Carson Trimborn

  5. I think Fenerbache definitely has one of the best rosters in the EuroLeague! I think they have what it takes to make it back to the championship, even though success in this league isn't entirely on the players. If their coach can continue to build chemistry with the diverse group of guys, especially with newcomer Tyler Dorsey, than Fenerbache will be in contention! What do you think has been holding them back if anything at all?

  6. this is a great post I find it very Interesting post and the combination of the players from across the world and so much diversity is definitely one of the reasons for success but i believe it could also be a weakness because like we have discussed in class the teams that inevitably do the best are the teams that have chemistry and have played together their whole life and share that bond so i would say its necessary that they find that chemistry or recruit players with chemistry

Interesting post I remember watching Bjelinca in the NBA and he was a sharpshooter so he can bring spacing to the team. The fact that they have him, Kostas, and Carsen Edwards is crazy they have a really well-rounded roster with a lot of NBA level talent. Carsen Edwards was a walking bucket at Purdue and I remember watching him battle it out in March Madness. I think that with those 3 they can beat any other team in the Euroleague and make it back to the finals.

  8. It's exciting to see Fenerbache basketball continuing their successful run, especially with their recent championship appearances. It's always a good sign when superstar players like Giannis Antetokounmpo take notice of a team's strong performance (I am a huge fan of his and also his story). And with their current standing in the EuroLeague, it seems like they have a real shot at the top seed.

  9. This is a very interesting post, as I was very surprised when reading about how much success this club has had. In addition to that, I was extremely shocked with the amount of talent on this team, especially former NBA players. Nemanja Bjelica was a a extremely skilled role player in the NBA for years, and Carsen Edwards - a phenomenal college basketball player. I am very excited to watch a game of them soon with the knowledge now how much talent is on their roster.

  10. With their talented roster, experienced coaching staff, and dedicated fan base, there's no doubt that this team has the potential to continue to be a dominant force in the EuroLeague. I could see this team doing great things in the future of the EuroLeague but it is definitely a tall task to experience success in this league so we will see, I hope that they rise to the top as they seem to be on the brink of it.

  12. This is what makes a team so successful! The team has so much diverse talent. You have players from America and players from Europe, and you teach them to find chemistry on the court. This is the best thing to do, instead of only buying players from America because of their past history. I think they definitely have the chance to take it home!
