Former Dallas Mavericks guard Tyler Dorsey signs with Fenerbahce

Just yesterday, March 1st, Fenerbahçe announced in a press release that Tyler Dorsey, former guard from the Dallas Mavericks will be signing with their team.

The contract limits Dorsey, because if he were even able to get an offer from the NBA he would not be able to take it.

Dorsey was a former all star for the Oregon team, that he made the final four with 6 years ago. He then played on Maccabi Tel Aviv and Greece's team, Olympiacos from 2019-2022. His strong commitment and successes lead to a "two way deal" with the Dallas Mavericks this past off season, but he "he failed to crack Dallas’ rotation" and only got playing time in three games, before being waived at the end of the year.

Dorsey played on the G league team, Texas Legends, and the team allowed him to release his contract in order to play in the EuroLeague. It was essential that he was able to be released this early due to the fact that March 1 is the deadline to register new players in the Euroleague.

Do you think Dorseys decision, to move from the G league to the Euro league, was due to the fact he had believed he had no potential to go back to the NBA, and would rather take a better financial payout?

  1. No way! This is an incredible pickup for Fenerbahce, Tyler Dorsey aka Mr. March from Oregon! It is unfortunate his career in the NBA has not been very prosperous, but he can still be a valuable piece in the EuroLeague. In his time in Oregon, he was a microwave, he wasn't consistently the best player on that team, yet he could get the most hot. I do believe Tyler Dorsey believes he is more likely to get more money in the Euro League than the G League and probably better treatment too. If he is able to get hot at the right time in the EuroLeague for Fenerbahce, he can become a key marketing play and an american euro-favorite.

    1. I agree that Tyler Dorsey's career in the NBA hasn't been as successful as he would have liked, but it's great to see him get a fresh start in the EuroLeague with Fenerbahce!

  2. I love this! It's great to see a talented basketball player like Dorsey continue to pursue his passion for the game and find success overseas in the EuroLeague. While the contract may limit his options to return to the NBA, it's clear that Dorsey has the drive and determination to continue to play at the highest level possible. It's understandable that Dorsey would want to take advantage of the opportunity to play in the EuroLeague and potentially earn a better financial payout. However, it is not always about the money, Dorsey likely just wants to be able to still get on the court and play ball. Overall, I am glad he found a place to continue competing in the Euroleague and I am sure he'll be a great fit for Fenerbahçe!

  3. Creative post! As a UCLA fan, I remember him being such a problem for us to handle when he was at Oregon, and I'm shocked he didn't have more success in the NBA. I think that amongst players who can't crack NBA rotations, there is mixed opinions on whether or not the G League is more worth their time than the Euroleague is. Some would probably base the decision off of salary differences, and others might rather stay in the states, but in Tyler Dorsey's case, I believe it was for the money.

    1. That's definitely an interesting point; its hard to say what the riht choice is for each individual player and every situation is unique...

  4. That's sick! Hopefully he can bring something good to Fenerbahçe. Hopefully he Euroleague is somewhere he can shine, but this move seems like a bit of separation on his part. With a contract that wouldn't allow him to leave for the NBA, Tyler Dorsey is locked into Fenerbahçe no matter how well he performs. Taking a contract like that is a move for someone who knows he needs this shot. I'm hoping for Fenerbahçe's sake that he comes in and he plays lights out, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

    1. I'm also cautiously optimistic about his move to Fenerbahçe -- I'm sure he's thought it thru and knows what he's getting himself into. It's definitely a risk, but if it pays off it could be a great opportunity overall.

I think it was a good decision to sign with the Fenerbahce team. I'm sure he would rather be the star player on a worse team rather than struggling to get any playing time. I remember watching him at Oregon and he brought electricity to the court. I also think it was smart to take the guaranteed contract because if he was on the end of the bench he could've been released at any time.

    1. I agree with you, it was definitely a smart decision for him to sign. He may have had to struggle for playing time if he had gone to a different team, but here he can be a star player and show off the skills he developed while he played great at Oregon.

  6. Wow, exciting news for Fenerbahçe and Tyler Dorsey! It's always interesting to see players making moves and finding success in different leagues. As for whether his decision was purely financial or not, it's hard to say for sure. It's possible that he saw more opportunities for playing time and success in the Euroleague, or maybe he just wanted to try something new. Either way, it'll be exciting to see how he performs with his new team! I remember him from the NBA so it is cool to see him playing overseas now!!

  7. This is a very interesting post, as it mentions a extremely notable basketball from my past, Tyler Dorsey. I remember him very well from highschool and watching him play at Oregon. His NBA career was unfortunately much shorter than I anticipated, but I think this decision is a great opportunity for him to showcase his talent and get a chance to make it back to the NBA. I wish the best for him, and really hope that soon he can be back on a NBA court.

    1. It's definitely a shame that his NBA career didn't last as long as we / and him had all hoped, but I think this is a great chance for him to show off what he can do and hopefully make it back to the NBA. I'm sure he'll make the most out of this opportunity...

  8. The perseverance of athletes in the face of obstacles is always an inspiration. I'm confident that Tyler will advance in his career, and it's inspiring to imagine what he'll be able to do in the future. I remember Tyler thriving in March and being great for the Oregon Ducks. I hope he takes the EuroLeague by storm and maybe he will find his way back to the NBA one day as he is a player with great potential.

  9. I think Dorsey knew that he would be the star of a team if he moved from the G League to the EuroLeague. He also could have done this to show his talents at a lower level so he gets more of an NBA chance once he proves himself in the EuroLeague. However, I would not have taken the payout. NBA players make a ton of money, even compared to the EuroLeague.

    1. I think your right, Dorsey probably did have an idea that he would be the star if he moved to the EuroLeague. I think it was a smart move for him to prove his worth at a lower level before making the jump to the NBA.

  10. Wow! I think Dorsey knew that the Euroleague would provide way more opportunities than in the G League. Also, a player like him, needs to continue to make money. This is the only possible way to get more of it. It would allow him to show others his potential, especially if he helps the team win the championship. Additionally, if he had certain sponsors for himself, that would be great in showing he's more of a basketball player, but a public figure. People from the US will start to support him in the Euroleague, more motivation.

    1. Thanks! That's a great point - Dorsey was aware of the potential opportunities the Euroleague could provide him and the potential to make more money. It seems like a great decision on his end ultimately.

  11. I think that Dorsey's decision to move to the EuroLeague was not due to the fact that he doesn't believe he will be able to break into the NBA. I think that the decision came down to being able to play at a higher level in Europe with higher financial compensation in comparison to the G-League. It seems as though many American players are beginning to make these decisions more as almost every European team roster has at least one American normally.
